3:10 to Yuma (1957)

During the 1950s, the Western grew a conscience -- preferring to impart Important Social Messages instead of pure action. High Noon and Shane were the most famous of these, but Delmer Daves' 3:10 to Yuma (1957), based on an Elmore Leonard story, is a scrappier, tenser example. Glenn Ford plays a captured bandit who must be held prisoner -- and hidden from the rest of his gang -- long enough for the 3:10 train to arrive. Van Heflin plays the poor farmer coerced into doing this dirty job. read more...

The Haunting (1963)

Robert Wise's The Haunting is one of the few horror movies that actually scared me. Wise worked with both Orson Welles and Val Lewton during his long and admirable career, and both their influences seem to have rubbed off in this one production. Claire Bloom, Julie Harris and Russ Tamblyn (the latter from Wise's earlier West Side Story) are hired to stay in a haunted house to record what happens, using modern knowledge and technology. Eleanor (Harris), who was hired for having previous ghostly experiences, is the most perceptive of the bunch. Pretty soon, scary stuff starts happening. There are no monsters or ghostly apparitions; it's all done with sounds and ideas. read more...

Straw Dogs (1971)

Sam Peckinpah (1925-84) made his reputation with earth-shattering violence on screen and volatile behavior offscreen. One of his best films, Straw Dogs (1971), has been released on an essential new double-disc set with a stunning new transfer. read more...

The Lives of Others (2006)

Set in East Berlin circa 1984, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's feature debut -- the 2006 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner -- is a careful listener and a quiet observer, telling the tale of the fascinating tête-à-tête between playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and secret policeman Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe). Both characters fall into shades of gray: Dreyman writes plays fully supported by the state, but, inspired by his mentor, decides to write his first subversive work. Wiesler bugs Dreyman's apartment and listens for subversive activity, but instead he grows to like the scribbler and his actress girlfriend, Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). A lesser film would have tied things up with a slam-bang thriller chase, but The Lives of Others conjures up a truly memorable, patient and very moving payoff. read more...

The Innocents (1961)

Truman Capote and William Archibald adapted Henry James' The Turn of the Screw and turned it into one of the most memorably chilling horror films of the 20th century. It has the flavor of one of those polite British studio productions, with many hands contributing to the final product, but Jack Clayton's direction and the gorgeous, widescreen, black-and-white cinematography by Freddie Francis help make it a one of a kind film (though it is almost always paired on a double-bill with Robert Wise's The Haunting). read more...
