Mysteries of Lisbon (2011)

The Chilean-born filmmaker Raoul Ruiz passed away this August at the age of 70, leaving behind a sometimes awesome, sometimes baffling set of films. Mysteries of Lisbon is one of his latest, though not his last. It's being shown in the U.S. in a 4-1/2 hour version, edited down from a six-episode TV mini-series. read more...

The Passenger (1975)

In January of 1999, I had the opportunity to see my first three Michelangelo Antonioni movies on the big screen at a Castro Theater festival. I saw Blowup first, but The Passenger affected me more strongly. read more...

The Sacrifice (1986)

Andrei Tarkovsky was dying while making this, his final feature, and that feeling of finality permeates the entire film. Alexander (Erland Josephson) is a journalist, philosopher and retired actor who celebrates a birthday with friends and family. At some point, it is announced that nuclear war has begun. Alexander prays, saying he would give up everything for the war not to have started. He sleeps, and his neighbor Otto -- who collects ghost stories and other weird tales -- tells him that if he visits another neighbor, Alexander's maid Maria (Gudún S. Gísladóttir) and makes love with her, he can stop the war. (Apparently she's a witch.) read more...

Time Regained (1999)

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a movie called Sunshine that ran three hours and was too overly simplified. Now we have a movie called Time Regained that runs three hours and is too overly complicated. Though if I had a choice of which one to see again, it would be Time Regained, without hesitation. Even though I was almost always completely in the dark, this new film by director Raul Ruiz is inventive and astounding in ways I've never seen before. read more...

Goodbye to Language 3D (2014)

Now eighty-three years old, Jean-Luc Godard has decided to make his first 3D feature; I read somewhere that he went to see Piranha 3D and it inspired him to make this. It's a delicious image, the crusty old genius sitting in a multiplex, wearing funny glasses and perhaps even eating popcorn. Regardless of whether or not it's true, the old master seems in a more playful mood this time out. Goodbye to Language 3D is only 70 minutes long, as baffling as anything he has ever made, but those moments and thoughts that jut out from the screen seem so feisty now, as if his movie were a batch of piranha devouring whatever ideas we might have had about what cinema is, should be, or can be. read more...
