The Muppet Movie (1979)

Long before the cynical 1990s, before Meet the Feebles and "Greg the Bunny," came this post-modern puppet tale. The filmmakers took the familiar characters from the 1976-1981 television show, Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, etc., and tell their "origin" story, following them from their humble beginnings to the gates of Hollywood. read more...

The Muppets (2011)

The Muppets have always been post-modern. On TV, "The Muppet Show" (1976-1981), was always as much about behind-the-scenes as it was about the stuff on stage. The brilliant The Muppet Movie (1979) skewed the road movie and the showbiz drama with constant self references, and even began and ended in a Hollywood screening room (with a stop in the middle when the film "breaks"). Now, some 35 years after the show began, writer/actor Jason Segel, writer Nicholas Stoller, and director James Bobin (of the great TV show "Flight of the Conchords"), revamp the Muppets for 2011, but remain true to that spirit of self-awareness. read more...

Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)

The brilliant, time-traveling dog Mr. Peabody and his adopted boy Sherman first appeared in short bits on the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoon show in the late 1950s. They were rendered in simple line drawings for quick and cheap television, but with sharp, clever, gag-based writing -- with humor that ranged from subtle to silly -- and a talented voice cast. read more...

Horton Hears a Who! (2008)

After two truly unbearable live-action big-screen Dr. Seuss adaptations (The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat), this unlikely computer-animated entry is a surprising success. Jim Carrey returns to Seussland as the voice of the good-hearted elephant Horton, who hears a voice emanating from a floating speck of dust. The speck turns out to be an entire miniature city. Working with the mayor (voiced by Steve Carell), Horton tries to protect it. Carrey's performance is uncharacteristically measured and relaxed, and he's funnier than he has been in years. Writers Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul manage to flesh out the book without relying on mindless filler, and they even throw in a few adult-friendly jokes. Carol Burnett voices a domineering, matronly kangaroo. read more...

The Grinch (2018)

This second big-screen re-do of Dr. Seuss's 1957 kids' book and Chuck Jones's1966 How the Grinch Stole Christmas! TV special is a little lightweight, but it's a drastic improvement over the gaudy, vulgar 2000 live-action movie by Ron Howard. To tell the truth, this Grinch's brevity and bright, bold colors may be just the kind of thing to relax and get lost in this holiday season. The Grinch has been softened a little so that he's not just mean for mean's sake; now he's mean because he's actually sad. This may sound silly, but it actually makes more sense, and the transformation from naughty to nice is more satisfying. (Before, the mean Grinch was so much more fun than the nice one.) Plus, now we don't have to endure the character being so darn nasty to his dog, Max. read more...
