Eureka (2001)

If you go through life looking for minor miracles, how about this one: a four-hour, black-and-white Japanese movie with English subtitles gets released into American theaters. In our increasingly U.S.-centered world, more and more great foreign films are not making it to our shores, but especially the longer, more challenging, and less marketable ones. But, somehow, here is Aoyama Shinji's Eureka, the final of the six films from the Shooting Gallery's spring series. read more...

Waking Life (2001)

"Dream is destiny," a little girl tells the young Wiley Wiggins at the start of the new Waking Life, a brilliant new animated film from Richard Linklater (Slacker). And in the spirit of those words, the film takes on dreams and dream logic with the most full-fledged embrace since Luis Bunuel released The Phantom of Liberty nearly three decades ago. read more...

Cemetery of Splendor (2016)

This one is only for the most adventurous moviegoers and die-hard cineastes, the ones who regularly dip into the works of Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, Bela Tarr, Alain Resnais, and Robert Bresson. It comes from Thai-born, and Chicago-educated filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (you can call him "Joe"). Weerasethakul's poetic, dreamy films are frequently set in beautiful, realistic settings, with surreal things happening; people sometimes changing into other things, or seeing ghosts, or other phenomena. Cemetery of Splendor (2016) takes place in a rural hospital (actually converted schoolhouse), where soldiers suffer from some kind of mysterious sleeping sickness. As part of some kind of experimental technique, their beds are surrounded by glowing rods that slowly change color, casting moody glows on everything. read more...

The Intruder (2005)

The latest release by the brilliant French filmmaker Claire Denis, The Intruder is a gloriously poetic, yet often baffling experience about an old man's final days before, during and after a black market heart transplant. The man (Michel Subor) travels from snowy, chilly woods on one side of the world to a tropical paradise on the other, looking for his neglected offspring. read more...

Syndromes and a Century (2007)

Apichatpong Weerasethakul's fourth feature film is, like his previous Tropical Malady, divided into two parts. The two halves are dedicated to the director's mother and father, more or less recounting their meeting while working in a Thailand hospital. Each half is presented through the haze of memory, and certain conversations and sequences play out with slight differences, depending on how each character remembers it. read more...
