Hamlet (1996)

There have been at least 35 filmed versions of Hamlet, and possibly a hundred more. The most famous three have been Laurence Olivier's 1948 Oscar winning version, the 1969 Tony Richardson version with Anthony Hopkins and Marianne Faithfull as Ophelia (!) and the 1990 Franco Zefferelli version with Mel Gibson and Glenn Close. Now, for the first time in 100 years of cinema, the entire four-hour version, the complete, uncut text of Hamlet has been filmed. read more...

The Social Network (2010)

After the sweet, maudlin, Oscar-sludge of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Fincher gets himself back on track with The Social Network, another of his meticulous explorations of dark souls, plunging ever darker and deeper. It's odd how perfectly Fincher has twisted the traditional "biopic" formula to fit his needs, but he has done it. It's perhaps even odder that Aaron Sorkin has written it, giving these miscreants and malcontents some of the most terrific dialogue of the year. Yet all of these misshapen odds and ends click together for one of the year's most satisfying films so far. read more...

Amistad (1997)

It all starts with a nail, just as Schindler's List began with a candle. The nail is pulled out of a stone by bare, bleeding fingers. A face covered in beady sweat is seen and harsh breathing is heard. These are the last moments of being captured and the first moments of freedom. Soon, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) will lead a band of slaves against their captors, in the middle of a lightning storm, in the extraordinary first 10 minutes of Steven Spielberg's new film, Amistad. read more...
