Hard-Boiled (1992)

John Woo's final Hong Kong film before moving to Hollywood, Hard-Boiled is also his most Hollywood-ready, forgoing some of the more emotionally operatic moments inherent in A Better Tomorrow (1986) and The Killer (1989). Even the usual male bonding aspect has been beefed up. read more...

The Fugitive (1993)

The Fugitive is a rare example of everything in the Hollywood machine coming together in the right way at the right time and working perfectly. Based loosely on the 1963 TV series created by Roy Huggins, the movie's plot takes some of its basic elements: Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) comes home to find his wife's body; he fights with the one-armed man who committed the crime, but winds up getting arrested himself. When the prison transport bus crashes, Kimble escapes and proceeds to track down the one-armed man, hotly pursued by U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) and his crew. read more...

Lethal Weapon (1987)

Action movies were big business in the 1980s, but few of them rose to the level of Lethal Weapon, which, as goes the old adage, actually focused on interesting characters that had a strong chemistry. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is an old fussbudget, newly fifty years old, with a large family, and concerned about staying alive for his retirement. read more...

Live Free or Die Hard (2007)

Shaky, choppy director Len Wiseman, of the two Underworld films, exceeds all expectations with this clean, exciting fourth Die Hard. It's about computer terrorism, but it feels like a throwback to the days of movies before computers, with actual cars blowing up and actual stunt men falling down shafts. read more...

Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)

The first ten minutes of this movie are a monster blowout. We get the title, no credits, and the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" cranked up in Dolby Digital. Just as we start groovin', a building blows up, loud, right in the middle of a lyric. In minutes, John McClane (Bruce Willis) is being made to stand on a street corner in Harlem wearing a racially offensive sandwich board. Sure death. He is saved by Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson), they jump into a cab, race away, and we have a movie. read more...
