Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
Hollywood in general and filmmakers in particular seem to have learned that biopics are generally not very interesting, and can fall into cliché, when they treat the entire life story of a famous person. They can tend to skim over the surface of things, rather than digging deep. But films like
Capote (and its twin,
Infamous),
Frost/Nixon,
Invictus,
Hitchcock,
Hyde Park on Hudson,
Lincoln, and now the new Saving Mr. Banks, show that simply telling one chapter of a life story can be twice as compelling. Watching characters respond to one situation, rather than a disconnected series of them, provides a great deal more depth. read more...

The Right Stuff (1983)
It was the film that had everything going for it. It was three hours long, featured an outstanding cast of up-and-coming stars, great special effects, a great script, jaw-dropping cinematography, chest-thumping American patriotism, and just a little subversiveness thrown in to keep the cynics happy. (It beautifully mixes playfulness and heroism.) It earned eight Oscar nominations and took four awards home. But somehow Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff was a bitter, crippling flop, earning only about $21 million against its approximate $27 million budget. read more...

The Hurricane (1999)
Denzel Washington boxes, hollers, sweats, swoons, and ages in The Hurricane, a great showcase for the actor's skills. Washington is always so good, but usually gets stuck in less-than-promising roles (like The Bone Collector). The Hurricane isn't much better, but at least this role is worth his time. read more...
