The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

It's not enough for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) to have simply survived her first Hunger Games. She also has to be the "chosen one," and lead a revolution against the evil and corrupt President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and his followers. Too bad that doesn't actually happen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. That event will be saved for the sequel(s) to come. What happens here instead seems to be just a stopover, or a holding pattern. This movie cooks up a ridiculous excuse to get Katniss and her pals to play the game again, even though they were supposed to be finished. read more...

Divergent (2014)

I wonder if the bar for all these young adult, sci-fi/fantasy/romance movies has been set too low? Could it be that teenage brains are too underdeveloped to comprehend more complex ideas and richer themes, or is it that studios and filmmakers simply assume so, based on what has worked before? read more...

Point Break (1991)

Kathryn Bigelow's terrific Point Break involves a young FBI agent (Keanu Reeves) who goes undercover as a surfer to catch "The Presidents," a band of bank robbers that dresses up as Reagan, Carter, LBJ, and Nixon. But to complicate things, he becomes involved with the spirituality of surfing, as preached by the gang's leader (Patrick Swayze). Director Bigelow is one of America's greatest unsung talents. She has a great eye not only for action, but also for the psychological push and pull behind the action. The key moment of the film comes when Reeves jumps out of a plane without a parachute as his last chance to catch the bad guy. The entire movie is beautifully shot; even the quiet beach scenes between Reeves and his love interest Lori Petty sparkle. I always expected that Bigelow's Near Dark would become her cult classic, but instead, this one did. Now it enjoys regular midnight performances with many devoted fans. Fox's original 2001 DVD release came with only a trailer and a short "making-of" documentary. In 2006, however, Fox released a new "special edition" with lots more extra stuff for fans. In 2011, a Blu-Ray edition was released. read more...

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

It was fun going to the The Empire Strikes Back when I was 11 and seeing my favorite characters again in new situations. At the time, I considered Star Wars the better movie of the two because of the cliffhanger ending of The Empire Strikes Back. Then, in college, I considered Star Wars better because of its classic Joseph Campbell-type themes. Now, in 1997, seeing the big screen re-release of the two movies within weeks of each other, I finally relent and admit that The Empire Strikes Back is the better of the two. In fact, it's clearly the best -- and the most warmly human -- of the entire series. read more...

A Chinese Ghost Story (1987)

Produced by Tsui Hark and directed by Ching Siu-tung, this incredible, high-flying martial arts fantasy/comedy is unlike just about anything else made in the 1980s. A Chinese Ghost Story (1987) follows an ineffectual tax collector (Leslie Cheung, from John Woo's A Better Tomorrow), who gets stuck after the rain washes away the ink in his book. So he seeks shelter in a haunted temple, where he meets a beautiful woman (Joey Wong, or, sometimes spelled "Joey Wang"); unfortunately, he does not know that she's a ghost. He also doesn't know that the woman is a prisoner of a tree demon who can attack with her a thousand-foot tongue (!). A helpful priest (Wu Ma) jumps into the amazing martial arts battles. Featuring zombies and a trip to the underworld, this movie's gorgeous cinematography seems to have 360-degree vision, and the crisp editing keeps everything clear and exciting; it took Hollywood years to catch up to this kind of kinetic action filmmaking. read more...
