Men in War (1957)

I'm a huge fan of director Anthony Mann, but not a huge fan of war films, so Mann's Men in War (1957) was a movie I wasn't exactly looking forward to, but knew I'd have to tackle someday, for better or for worse. Thankfully, it turns out to be a very good film, pure Mann, and I'm glad I saw it. read more...

Foxcatcher (2014)

Cinema has always been viewed as a lesser, a vulgar art form. In the early days, actors didn't even take credit because they feared it would tarnish their reputation on the legitimate stage. That stigma lasts up to today, and so narrowminded filmmakers and tastemakers assume that, since cinema has no inherent value outside of spectacle, it must be shaped to look like something more profound, i.e. an important novel, play, or -- more common these days -- a "true story." read more...

Le Samourai (1967)

How cool was Jean-Pierre Melville? He was cool enough to steal his last name from the greatest fiction writer of the 19th century and get away with it. He was cool enough that Jean-Luc Godard paid tribute to him by casting him as a visiting filmmaker in Breathless (1959). He was cool enough that, to this day, Quentin Tarantino, John Woo, Neil Jordan, and Jim Jarmusch all worship at his altar. (Woo is currently planning a remake of Melville's Le Cercle Rouge.) read more...

Macbeth (1971)

Like Hitchcock and De Palma, Roman Polanski is a filmmaker that works out his inner demons on film. So it's not surprising that he would choose to tackle William Shakespeare, with modern-day violence and nudity, as his first film after the murder of his wife Sharon Tate. When I first saw the film in 2002, on Columbia/TriStar's DVD, I found it admirable, but disappointing. I wrote about what I saw as a lack of precision and ferocity, and noted that both Orson Welles and Akira Kurosawa had already made outstanding versions of this particular play. read more...

The Homesman (2014)

Based on a classic novel by Glendon Swarthout, who also wrote The Shootist, The Homesman is something close to a great modern-day Western. As evidenced by his last film, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, director Tommy Lee Jones has a keen eye for hard landscapes (including his own weathered face) and emotional compositions. The Homesman is full of striking imagery: the locked, coffin-like coach, fresh new buildings in hardscrabble dirt, or a disturbed grave on a gnarly plain. read more...
