Rio Bravo (1959)

It's difficult to choose a single masterpiece by Howard Hawks because he was such a chameleon. He made top movies in all genres: the detective film (The Big Sleep), the western (Red River), the musical (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) the screwball comedy (Bringing Up Baby), the war film (Air Force), the epic (Land of the Pharaohs), the adventure (To Have and Have Not), the gangster film (Scarface), etc. He lent a professionalism, clarity, and solid pace to each movie he made. read more...

The Right Stuff (1983)

It was the film that had everything going for it. It was three hours long, featured an outstanding cast of up-and-coming stars, great special effects, a great script, jaw-dropping cinematography, chest-thumping American patriotism, and just a little subversiveness thrown in to keep the cynics happy. (It beautifully mixes playfulness and heroism.) It earned eight Oscar nominations and took four awards home. But somehow Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff was a bitter, crippling flop, earning only about $21 million against its approximate $27 million budget. read more...

Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Whether or not the courtroom details are accurate, Anatomy of a Murder has got a hell of a story. It was based on a popular book of a true case, by Robert Traver (a.k.a. Judge John D. Voelker), and Preminger had the iron guts enough to not make it sensationalist or sentimental. He just made a cold, hard movie. It goes on for two hours and forty minutes because it needs to, and that time feels just right. James Stewart, in unquestionably one of his greatest performances, stars as the fisherman lawyer who unexpectedly gets called for the big murder case. A soldier's wife (Lee Remick) is raped, and her husband (Ben Gazzara) is charged with murdering the rapist. George C. Scott, in one of his first roles, plays the prosecutor. Joseph Welch, a real-life judge, gives a marvelous performance as (what else?) the judge. read more...
