The Gallows Act II (2019)

Marginally better than its awful, found-footage predecessor, which is not saying much, this horror sequel still falls prey to the usual cliches, from cheap jump-scares to not-very-smart characters. read more...

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

The 2014 Ouija was one of the worst horror movies in recent memory and a hit. But whatever force inspires people to make lazy, dashed-off sequels — like Adam Wingard's recent Blair Witch — sometimes also inspires people to scrap everything and start fresh. So now director Mike Flanagan, who made the excellent Oculus and the very good Netflix thriller Hush (and who has nothing to do with the original Ouija) has taken over for the unexpectedly good Ouija: Origin of Evil. (Both movies are officially based on the Hasbro board game.) read more...

In Fear (2014)

Horror movies about young people on their way to a party or a concert, getting lost in the woods, and being terrorized, are not uncommon. But Jeremy Lovering's In Fear strips the genre to its essentials. It begins with a boy, a girl, and a car. Not long after meeting Lucy (Alice Englert) in a bar, Tom (Iain De Caestecker) invites her to a music festival, with a surprise stopover at a hotel for a special night. The hotel is remote and hard to find, so a truck appears to lead the couple there. Unfortunately, they quickly get lost. There are signs, but they seem to lead in a circle, or a "maze," as Lucy realizes at one point. read more...

Cell (2016)

This aggravating, confusing zombie thriller now has the dishonor of being arguably the worst movie ever made from a Stephen King novel, displacing Maximum Overdrive, Graveyard Shift, and The Mangler. However, those three movies are at least ridiculous and fun; Cell reaches a new low, feeling somehow displaced from anything resembling humanity. In trying to send a message about people spending too much time on their technological devices, the movie itself winds up as impersonal and awkward. read more...
