    Curse of the Demon (1957)

I was at my neighborhood video store when I noticed a used copy of Curse of the Demon on sale for $10. I picked it up, knowing that it was the chopped, 82 minute American version (it said so on the box). The British version of the movie runs 95 minutes, and is called Night of the Demon. (The title was changed for American audiences.) What the heck, though. It's a great movie nonetheless, and I'd been wanting to see it again. read more...

      Dark Passage (1947)

The third of their four films together, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall teamed up for one of the great San Francisco films, Dark Passage (1947), based on David Goodis' novel. Bogart plays an escaped convict (from Alcatraz) and Bacall helps him get plastic surgery. Writer/director Delmer Daves initially directs the film from Bogart's point of view and we don't see his face until afterwards. read more...

The Masque of the Red Death (1964)

Roger Corman's sixth Poe adaptation and by far his best, thanks to the beautiful, sinister color cinematography by future director Nicolas Roeg (Don't Look Now). Vincent Price plays a Satanist who keeps and controls reluctant "guests" at his castle while the Black Plague rages outside. The DVD comes in a beautiful widescreen transfer, and a whole second feature, Corman's The Premature Burial (1962), starring Ray Milland. read more...

          Husbands and Wives (1992)

Judy Davis was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her great performance in this 1992 Woody Allen masterpiece, but let's not forget that Woody himself is a pretty great comic actor, playing nervousness and neuroses like he plays his clarinet. In the film, he's a professor who develops a crush on an attractive writing student (Juliette Lewis), endangering his relationship with his wife (Mia Farrow). Davis plays a distraught wife just beginning a divorce from her husband (Sydney Pollack) and dating a romantic Irishman (Liam Neeson). read more...

            Caught (1949)

Max Ophüls is one of the more complex filmmakers in cinema history. Many critics consider him among the best of the best, Andrew Sarris chief among them. But others dismiss him as a maker of highly decorated, yet cornball women's pictures. Certainly Caught was treated as one of the latter. It was made during Ophüls' brief Hollywood career, where he made four English-language pictures between 1947 and 1949. (He was probably the only filmmaker to have made films in five languages, English, French, German, Italian, and Dutch.) But more than a cursory look at it reveals hidden complexities and untold depths. read more...
