Swordsman II (1992)

Tsui Hark co-wrote and produced this, one of the all-time great classic Hong Kong films. Jet Li stars (in one of his most playful roles) as a kind of Ming Dynasty playboy who falls for the deadly Asia the Invincible (Brigitte Lin). The plot is actually fairly complex, and lots of dazzling fight scenes follow. Ching Siu-Tung directs with astonishing clarity, speed and use of color. Stanley Tong is sometimes credited as co-director. The official U.S. release (The Legend of the Swordsman) is cut down to 99 minutes, so look for DVDs with the real title. The East Is Red: Swordsman III followed. read more...

Trainspotting (1996)

When I was 16 or 17, I loved the film A Clockwork Orange. I still love it, but not anymore as a fun and comical romp through a sadistic wasteland. Now the violence in the film leaves me quiet instead of laughing. I imagine Trainspotting will have the same effect on youth today. Especially because the film is far more entertaining than anything else playing in the multiplexes right now (except maybe Supercop). read more...

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)

When is Russ Meyer going to be taken seriously as an "auteur"? Here is a filmmaker who made some 25 successful independent movies, kept control over every aspect from editing to distribution, and owns all his negatives. (You will never see a bad print of a Meyer film.) He hasn't worked in over 25 years now, but that seems to be his own choice. He apparently starts and stops projects all the time, and is working on some mysterious and lengthy autobiography. In the meantime, his best movie, Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965) still makes the midnight rounds (it plays Saturday night, July 29 at the Bridge) and we can be reminded of what an energetic and fearless filmmaker he is. read more...

Fight Club (1999)

Seeing a David Fincher film (Alien 3, Seven and The Game) is like having an electronic gizmo plugged into your brain. It goes directly to its darkest corners and sucks at your deepest fears and desires. It's an invasive experience. Yet the whole thing feels electronic somehow. I don't know how future generations will regard this pop auteur, but for now, he's just the shot of electricity the cinema needs. read more...

Danger: Diabolik (1968)

Based on an Italian comic book (or "fumetti"), this Mario Bava crime thriller has never enjoyed the devotion of Bava's horror films. It probably suffered from bad timing, released among the campy but similar movies Batman (1966) and Barbarella (1968). But looking at the film on Paramount's superb new DVD, it's clear that a neglected masterpiece of the genre has now emerged. read more...
