Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood came after the sillier and more self-referential Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, and it's something of a disappointment, although -- like all the entries -- it still contains some interesting touches. This is the one in which Jason battles a Carrie-like telekinetic girl, Tina (Lar Park-Lincoln), though their meeting is far from simple. read more...

Night of the Demons (1988)

Unlike most other horror movies, the low-budget Night of the Demons (1988) actually takes place on Halloween night. It's willfully preposterous, featuring a band of characters that would never, ever actually be friends in real life, and heading out into the night to do something so dumb that it's inconceivable. The teens decide to hold a séance at an abandoned mortuary, said to be occupied by evil spirits. They all laugh and joke, and occasionally sneak off to have sex, but of course, the séance releases something terrible, and one by one, the teens become possessed, killer zombies. Meanwhile, elsewhere, there's an old man who puts razor blades in apples to give to trick-or-treaters, and he provides a memorable epilogue. The movie seems borderline offensive, until it becomes clear that the offensive characters tend to get what's coming to them. The characters who will eventually survive are actually a pleasant surprise. Legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley is among the cast. Kevin S. Tenney directed, from a screenplay by Joe Augustyn. To date there have been two sequels and a remake. [Note: Die hard viewers have the option of watching this movie in the "VHS Vault" on Shout! Factory TV... the movie plays just like an old VHS tape, with lines, fuzz, the works!] read more...

Halloween II (1981)

After creating the most successful independent film of all time (at the time) with Halloween (1978), director John Carpenter remained on board for this sequel, as co-writer, co-producer, composer of the music score, and -- some say -- an uncredited second unit director. But he left the directing duties to Rick Rosenthal. The story picks up just as the previous film leaves off; it's still Halloween night, 1978, in Haddonfield. Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) goes to the hospital, and though Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) shot the killer, Michael Myers, six times, he simply "got up and walked away." read more...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

I saw this in the theater with a group of high school friends, and it was great fun. Somehow A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors has always been just a bit more enjoyable than the typical horror sequel. Maybe it's because of the adorable young Patricia Arquette, or the youngish Laurence Fishburne. Or maybe it's because of "B" movie great John Saxon, or the return of the perpetually sleepy Heather Langenkamp, and the great, campy Robert Englund from the first movie. Or maybe it's because Wes Craven himself helped write the screenplay, alongside Frank Darabont, who would go on to become a highly acclaimed director himself. Or maybe it's because of the unique killing scenes, such as the huge Freddy Krueger snake, or the unforgettable TV scene ("It's your big break in TV!"). Maybe it's even because of the anthemic, cheesy metal theme song, "Dream Warriors" by Dokken. Anyway you slice it (no pun intended) this is a must-see for anyone who has a soft-spot for 1980s horror movies. read more...
