The Earth Dies Screaming (1964)

The best of the Hammer Horror directors, Terence Fisher, directed this sci-fi quickie somewhere between Dracula and Frankenstein sequels. It's ridiculous in spots, but it's very earnest and has some striking visual ideas. The Earth Dies Screaming begins with humans simply collapsing, some while operating trains or planes, causing crashes. A few humans in the English countryside survive, including the cowboy-like American Jeff Nolan (Willard Parker), who takes charge of the gentler Brits. Quite a lot of the film plays like the as-yet-unmade Night of the Living Dead, as they take refuge in a hotel, argue, and try to figure out what's going on outside. Fisher eventually reveals a few slow-moving robot monsters (pronounced "ro-BUT" by our American friend) and white-eyed humans, and, in the last 10 minutes, the movie cooks up a plan to stop them all. It's shot in black-and-white by Arthur Lavis, and it looks good for what otherwise appears to be a disposable 62-minute "B" movie. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray in 2016; it comes with a commentary track by historian Richard Harland Smith and a selection of low-budget sci-fi trailers. read more...

Term Life (2016)

This labored, failed thriller feels like a collection of odd puzzle pieces that don't fit, but have been nonetheless forced together. Even the great cast members seem squeezed into the wrong roles. Vince Vaughn, in a strangely awful haircut, is denied a sense of humor. He Hailee Steinfeld can't generate any kind of father-daughter bond, and even a reunion between Swingers Vaughn and Jon Favreau passes by cluelessly. read more...

The Black Sleep (1956)

The Black Sleep is a strange movie. It's an all-star roundup of horror actors made at a time when such things were definitely not in vogue anymore. Even weirder, it seems to have some kind of connection with Edward D. Wood, Jr., who had both Bela Lugosi and Tor Johnson on his roster at the time; but this movie seems to have been made with some kind of budget. Regardless, it's a pretty passable effort, made with a degree of professionalism, if not style. The actual star is the uninteresting Herbert Rudley, who plays a doctor falsely accused of murder and sentenced to hang. Sir Joel Cadman (Basil Rathbone) visits him in his cell and gives him the "black sleep," which gives the illusion of his being dead. From there, the two retreat to Cadman's lab to continue his research. Bela Lugosi is a mute assistant, Lon Chaney Jr. is a failed experiment, a violent brute, and John Carradine is a resident of a secret underground prison. Akim Tamiroff seems to be having lots of fun as "Odo," a not-quite-trustworthy businessman who brings Cadman the "materials" he needs. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray, with a commentary track by historians Tom Weaver and David Schecter, a trailer, and a "Trailers from Hell" segment with Joe Dante. read more...
