Dune (1984)

Dune is mainly interesting as a curio in the career of the brilliant, bizarre director David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive); fans may enjoy combing through the movie to find his unique touches, but his detractors will argue that it's just more "weird for weird's sake." Unfortunately, anyone looking for a satisfying and coherent science fiction epic will have to look elsewhere. Lynch compressed the 500-page novel into an awkward 137-minute movie, resulting in an overuse on terrible, expository dialogue and characters "thinking" out loud to explain their motivations. (A 177-minute version was assembled for television, but Lynch did not approve it and removed his name from it.) read more...

    Metropolis (2001)

An early scene in the new anime Metropolis perfectly illustrates how I feel about this film. A detective named Shunsaku Ban and his young assistant Kenichi from Japan are attempting to hire a guide to help them find their way around the gargantuan city of Metropolis. A man sitting behind a desk begins to explain something to them, but they're completely distracted by a giant fish swimming around in a huge tank built into the wall behind the desk -- a fish that could swallow all three of them plus the desk as an appetizer. read more...

    A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Most of these, such as Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982), Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall (1990), Gary Fleder's Impostor (2002) and John Woo's Paycheck (2003) were instantly underrated upon release, and A Scanner Darkly is likely to join them. (Only Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, from 2002, hit the right combo of sci-fi smarts and audience appeal.) read more...
