The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

If you need to adapt a huge Broadway spectacle to the screen, who better to do it than Joel Schumacher, the man forever infamous for putting nipples on Batman? And in truth, Schumacher does a remarkable job navigating the film's tremendous sets, floating his camera through rafters and around pillars with great energy. Yet, we have the play itself to deal with, a work based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, but plagued by Andrew Lloyd Weber's hideous and already dated musical score (parts of it sound like 1980s hair metal). In addition, we have a pretty-faced, pretty-voiced cast who can't seem to muster one complete personality between them. read more...

Corpse Bride (2005)

Once hailed as a "boy genius" with enough gumption to turn Batman into his own darkly personal vision, Tim Burton has lately seemed confused about how to further adapt his singular talent to mainstream entertainment. Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were all good films, but they all felt just a bit restrained in comparison to the early works, as if they were unfinished, or still searching for something. (We won't even mention the horrible travesty of Planet of the Apes.) read more...

Open Your Eyes (1997)

Ladies' man Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) leaves his casual sex partner for Sofia (Penelope Cruz), for whom he begins to feel his first feelings of true love. But his ex drives him off a cliff, seriously disfiguring his face. He wears a spooky mask and begins to hallucinate, until it's no longer clear what's real and what's not. Made in 1997, Open Your Eyes is an amazing thriller that generates genuine dread, suspense, and a dark, nightmarish quality. When the twisted plot is finally cleared up at the end, it's explained quickly and cleanly. It instantly became one of Spain's highest grossing films. But its American distributor, Artisan, seriously botched both the 1999 American theatrical release and the subsequent video release and hardly anyone saw it -- except for Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise, who engineered the dumber American remake, Vanilla Sky. read more...
