Antarctica: A Year on Ice (2014)

In Antarctica, there exist several research stations where scientists, engineers, technicians, and other experts live and work during the summer months, when the sun can be seen in the sky, and during one period, never completely sets. But in the winter months, a handful of brave souls stay behind to endure storms, isolation, disorientation, and a brutal number of weeks when the sun cannot be seen at all. Filmmaker Anthony Powell keeps his cameras rolling in the bitter cold, picking up incredible time-lapse images, interviews with workers, and moments of jubilance, moments of heartbreak, and moments of truly astounding confrontations between man and nature at her most intense. read more...

City of Gold (2016)

Laura Gabbert's City of Gold is a documentary about the Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold, but it's really a documentary about journalism and eating, and truly appreciating both words and food. And, if I may struggle over a word for a moment, it's delectable. Working for the Los Angeles Times, Jonathan Gold limits his culinary explorations to that city, but is actually unlimited, given the large number of cultures and dishes available there. Truly curious, Gold researches and dines several times before even setting fingers to keyboard. He's unassuming, but still well-known among the food world, he's slightly feared -- we see one restauranteur freaking out when Gold arrives unannounced -- but also loved; one interviewee explains that Gold is a most empathetic critic, more interested in understanding and sharing than he is in writing well-worded pans. Gold himself is a humble subject, perhaps not very dynamic, but still kind of lovable. He's not exactly tubby, but parts of him are: his fingers and neck. He has long, thinning gray hair and a mustache, and wears suspenders that literally seem to keep up his pants (they're not a fashion statement). He's seen giving a graduation speech and a reading in a bookstore, and he appears fairly uncomfortable at both. He claims to be lazy and easily distracted, forever late on reviews and constantly hounded by exasperated editors. But I see him as more curious than lazy. He never stops working; he just finds more things to absorb, either through his eyes, or his taste buds. Some celebrity chefs are interviewed (including Roy Choi, who previously made a movie mark as the creative consultant for Jon Favreau's wonderful Chef), and there's quite a bit of drool-worthy food photography, but director Gabbert lets Gold be his own subject. read more...

[email protected] (2007)

In the wonderful new documentary Young @ Heart, a group of seventy, eighty and ninety-year olds get together and perform songs by Sonic Youth, Coldplay, James Brown, the Clash, David Bowie, the Ramones and other contemporary bands. It sounds dubious and cutesy, but within minutes it reveals itself as the real thing and doubt gives way to unbridled enthusiasm. It's the type of film that sometimes becomes a word-of-mouth hit, although converts won't want to talk too much about what happens; as you may guess, some of the singers don't have long to live and one or two of them don't make it to the end of the film. Several characters become fascinating in their own right, but none more so than troupe director Bob Cilman, who does not pander to his singers because of their age. He's a tough, brutal drill sergeant, but he can open his heart when it matters most. The film's director Stephen Walker adds his own narration and occasionally enters into the film, which somehow makes it feel less like a documentary; Walker is just as caught up in the moment as we are. Walker's wife, the producer Sally George, directed several funny music videos featuring the group, but the film's highlight has to be a truly emotionally overwhelming concert at a prison. (As of today, the group has a following in Europe and has a CD available.) read more...
