Mojave (2016)

This bizarre, quasi-existential neo-Western is full of brainy chit-chat but doesn't actually offer any real ideas. The characters are so thin that the outcome of their conflict doesn't really matter. There's no one to root for. The second film directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) -- whose previous film was the equally inert London Boulevard -- Mojave gets off to a bad start by introducing Tom (Garrett Hedlund), who is famous, though we have no idea what he actually does (he may be an actor or an artist). read more...

    Topaz (1969)

A lengthy espionage thriller with no American stars, Topaz nevertheless shows Hitchcock in peak form. A French intelligence agent works with an American one to figure out what the Russians are doing in Cuba. The great French star Michel Piccoli (Contempt, Belle de Jour) appears as a bad guy. This disc contains an outstanding documentary hosted by critic Leonard Maltin in which he explains that even just a "good" Hitchcock film is better than most people's "great" films. read more...

      Virunga (2014)

Netflix's own feature documentary Virunga received an Oscar nomination, which will most likely pique the interests of many subscribers. And it is indeed compelling, moving beyond the usual talking heads of most documentaries and closer to the human condition. It's also a strong work of journalism, depicting the struggles of the Virunga National Park in Africa's Congo. The park is home to an endangered species of mountain gorilla, and animal lovers will want to save their best "awwws" for these huggable, docile creatures. But the park must also maintain its own militia, because it's also the home of many precious natural resources -- including a recently discovered oil deposit -- which makes it a constant target. The movie includes some shocking hidden camera footage of oilmen discussing their nefarious plans, as well as footage of real attacks. In real-life, park director Emmanuel de Merode was shot just before the film's premiere (he survived). Orlando von Einsiedel directed this powerful, must-see film. read more...
