Son of Saul (2015)

You may have seen one too many Holocaust films already, but you haven't seen one like Son of Saul. The debut film of director László Nemes, this one will make you re-think all the others. Son of Saul makes you want to use words like "plunged" and "immersed." Never have we felt so inside this subject, at ground level. The camera follows the protagonist, Saul (a remarkable Géza Röhrig), mainly from behind as he goes about his singular task. (We probably see more of his back than we do his face.) He's part of the "Sonderkommando," in Auschwitz in 1944. In other words, he's a Jew who is working to dispose of all the dead bodies killed by the Nazis, via ovens, open pits, etc. read more...

Man Down (2016)

This war drama contains an earnest plea, a call for sympathy and understanding for soldiers suffering from PTSD, but the movie is so scattershot, somber, and confusing, that it never comes together. Director Dito Montiel is also a novelist and likes to tell stories about complex, urban men, but sometimes his ambition exceeds his reach, and his movies end up overly serious and a little simplistic. Man Down has the double-edged misfortune of being simplistic and complex at the same time. read more...

Krisha (2016)

Thanksgiving is always a good time for families in movies to come together and fall apart, but few of them are as penetrating or as vivid as Trey Edward Shults's Krisha. The title character (pronounced "KREE-sha"), played by Shults's real-life aunt, drives up, parks, forgets something in her car, can't find the house, steps in a mud puddle, and arrives on the doorstep, sweaty and out of breath. Long, silvery hair, overweight, and draped in yards of flowing curtain-like garments, she's a mess, apparently recovering from alcoholism, or worse. Even her own son is wary of her presence. It's a tour-de-force performance, needy and unhinged, and barely holding it together. Other members of Shults's family also star, as sympathetic, exasperated versions of themselves, some of them colorful characters, some of them adding to the background chaos. Especially notable is Krisha's mother (and Shult's grandmother), 92 year-old Billie Fairchild, who helps push Krisha around the bend. Shults writes and directs, based on his own short film, and films in a kind of hybrid of long-take realism and nightmarish insanity, plus merry-go-round pinwheels, and car-crash slow-motion. This is boldly independent work, with more than enough painful, searing drama to leave a mark. read more...
