Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

Based on a novel by Jesse Andrews (who also wrote the screenplay), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was a massive hit at Sundance, although by the time it hit theaters, the hype seemed to have worn off. The actual movie falls somewhere in-between: it's not a masterpiece, but it's funny and pretty entertaining. It is something of a disease-of-the-week movie, but like the better examples of that genre, it doesn't actually focus on the disease. High school senior Greg (Thomas Mann) is a self-described outcast whose only activities are avoiding other people at school, and making funny little parody films with his "co-worker" Earl (RJ Cyler). (Titles include A Sockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Butt, though they are particularly fond of Werner Herzog.) When his mother (Connie Britton) hears that a classmate, Rachel (Olivia Cooke) has cancer, she pushes Greg into paying her a visit. The visits become a regular thing, and soon, Greg allows her to see his films. That leads to the proposition that Greg and Earl make a film just for Rachel, but they have no idea what to make and time is running out. First-time director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon keeps the mood alive and quirky, allowing genuine sadness to seep in at the corners; Mann's narration helps nail down the mood. Jon Bernthal plays a helpful teacher who lets Greg and Earl eat lunch in his office and watch classic films, Molly Shannon is Rachel's mom, swilling a lot of white wine, and Nick Offerman is typically hilarious as Greg's father, who likes to eat strange foods. read more...

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017)

With his girlfriend Greta Gerwig having gone off to make her own remarkable, wonderful feature filmmaking debut Lady Bird, Noah Baumbach is back to writing and directing his own movies. While he is sometimes capable of hitting the jackpot, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is one of his more annoying efforts. In other words, it's a heavily Woody Allen-influenced movie about elite, overly-educated New Yorkers talking a great deal, frequently arguing, and forever seeking (and never finding) a moment of genius, or at least a great one-liner. The film follows artist Harold Meyerowitz (Dustin Hoffman) and his three children from different marriages (Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, and Elizabeth Marvel). They argue about their huge apartment and then they argue when Harold falls ill and winds up in the hospital. It doesn't help that Baumbach casts fussbudgets like Stiller and Hoffman, making everything just a little more unpleasantly tense. Emma Thompson tries to lighten things up as Harold's kooky wife, but the movie is truly blessed with the presence of Adam Sandler at his best. (Contrary to popular opinion, he is a great actor when truly challenged.) He is at his most soulful here, struggling between rage and sadness, and giving the movie its most loving moments in scenes with his teen daughter (Grace Van Patten). A song they perform together on the piano is more than every other scene put together. read more...

Mistress America (2015)

The new movie from Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, is intelligent but overwritten, energetic but irritating, and it's difficult to become attached to its chatty characters. With their wonderful previous movie, Frances Ha, director/co-writer Baumbach and co-writer/star Gerwig found the soul of their lovable goofball, but they fail to do the same with Mistress America. read more...
