The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)

Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed this unusual and highly potent romance between a widow (Gene Tierney) and the ghost of an old sea captain (Rex Harrison), whose former house she has moved into. George Sanders co-stars as a soggy fop who completes the strange love triangle, and Natalie Wood plays Tierney's childhood self. This ludicrous scenario somehow comes to life through Mankiewicz's no-nonsense direction and one of composer Bernard Herrmann's most beautiful original scores. The DVD contains two commentary tracks, a Rex Harrison biography, trailers and stills. read more...

Funny Face (1957)

The cinema was created for Audrey Hepburn's face. Light and celluloid never caressed any other actor's face so perfectly, so lovingly. She was beautiful and charming and regal. She moved like some lovely, lean sea creature. Her first starring role in Roman Holiday (1953), for which she won an Oscar, set her up in our minds as a princess, and we never got over it. read more...

Upside Down (2013)

The award-winning Argentinean short film director Juan Solanas makes his English-language feature debut with this astounding failure, a movie that will surely wow audiences with its awesome visuals, but will floor them with its unbelievably awful storytelling. The movie begins with our hero (Jim Sturgess) explaining the rules of the universe to us, and then spends the next 98 minutes trying to avoid or ignore those rules. It can make a viewer's head spin trying to ask questions about how and why anything works. read more...
