Museum Hours (2013)

Johann (Bobby Sommer) is in his 60s and works as a guard at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, which is known for its collection of Bruegels. Johann isn't stuffy. He used to work in the heavy metal music biz and claims to like Judas Priest. But after years at the museum, he has some observances about the people that come there and they way they view the paintings. He murmurs these observances in voiceover, while overseeing the many quiet rooms, filled with art and silence. read more...

Flight of the Red Balloon (2008)

Like Hou Hsiao-hsien's more recent work, Flight of the Red Balloon moves a little more toward international accessibility and away from his early, uniquely Taiwanese stories. It's of a piece with Café Lumiere (2003), for which Hou was invited to Japan to make a film in tribute to Yasujiro Ozu. For the new film, Hou comes to France to pay tribute to Albert Lamorisse's legendary and beloved short film The Red Balloon (1956). (It's not a terribly surprising move, given that French critics and audiences have supported Hou more passionately and for much longer than their American counterparts.) read more...

The Wind Will Carry Us (1999)

Abbas Kiarostami's films have a knack for taking us away to a clearer, more vivid place, allowing us to breathe for what seems like the first time in years. He has done that once again, and better than ever before, with his newest film, The Wind Will Carry Us. It joins his list of recent unalloyed masterpieces: Close-Up (1990), And Life Goes On (1991), Through the Olive Trees (1994), Taste of Cherry (1998), and his screenplay for Jafar Panahi's The White Balloon (1995). read more...
