Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

This masterpiece from Steven Spielberg holds up remarkably well. In the fall of 1977, while Star Wars was still playing and going strong, it was released in theaters in a 135-minute version. In 1980, Spielberg released a "Special Edition," which trimmed the movie's mid-section and included some light-show footage of the interior of the alien spaceship. Finally in 1998, Spielberg finalized his director's cut, which runs 137 minutes, and incorporates the best stuff from the two previous versions, minus the light show (a wise choice). read more...

The Uninvited (1944)

Lewis Allen's The Uninvited (1944) lays claim to being the first serious movie ghost story, and I believe that is true. The best horror films of the 1920s and 1930s had been chiefly monster-based. And Val Lewton's remarkable string of nine horror films made between 1942 and 1946 were often about horrors of the mind and spirit rather than ghosts. So, yes, The Uninvited gets credit, especially now that it has a spiffy new Criterion Collection DVD and Blu-ray release. read more...

Eve's Bayou (1997)

It feels like I've seen dozens of films this year by first time writers and directors, and not one has stuck to me until now. Eve's Bayou is a most interesting debut by an actress named Kasi Lemmons. You might remember her face from such films as School Daze, The Silence of the Lambs, Hard Target, and Fear of a Black Hat, but she has chosen to not appear in her first film as a writer and director. Instead, she draws upon the skills she must have learned from watching and working with filmmakers such as Spike Lee, Robert Townsend, Jonathan Demme and John Woo. read more...
