Pete's Dragon (2016)

A remake of the 1977 movie, a musical that combined live-action and animation, this new Pete's Dragon is something else: like Steven Spielberg's already-underrated The BFG, it's a gentle, whimsical tale, focusing on wonder in an age when most kids' movies focus on noise and movement. It begins with one of those car-ride scenes that can only end in a crash, but director David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints) handles it well, with discreet cutting. This leaves young Pete stranded in the woods alone, rescued and cared for by a kindly dragon (his big front feet look like soft, cuddly bean-bag chairs). Six years later, Pete (Oakes Fegley) has been raised apart from any humans; one day he spies a forest ranger, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), and becomes curious. Before long, he has been "rescued," but Grace's soon-to-be brother-in-law, a lumber man, Gavin (Karl Urban), has seen the dragon and sets out to capture it. read more...

The Secret World of Arrietty (2012)

It's all about the ladybugs. The animators at Japan's Studio Ghibli have been making children's movies since the 1980s and have earned the adoration of young and old, worldwide. They have done this not by making breakneck, slapstick movies full of fart jokes, but by focusing on the flow of life. These movies actually take the time, once a scene is over, to linger in the moment and watch a ladybug crawl across a leaf and take to the sky. read more...

Winnie the Pooh (2011)

At a time when the Disney company was all about canny marketing decisions, their choice to make a hand-drawn Winnie the Pooh that runs only 65 minutes was a bold one. And though it was not promoted well and it did not earn big numbers, it was a gently pleasing surprise for those who saw it. It's based loosely on A.A. Milne's stories, updated slight, but not crudely, for modern times. It has a fresh comic rhythm, dreamy, without being vulgar. (It proudly sported a "G" rating.) The hand-drawn animation is simple, but unfailingly lovely. And the movie perfectly captures the funny, lovely mood of the originals, including the motif of the book itself, with the characters marching across written pages, interacting with letters. The incomparable Jim Cummings provides the voice of Pooh and Tigger, Tom Kenny joins the cast as Rabbit, and Craig Ferguson is Owl. John Cleese narrates. Stephen J. Anderson and Don Hall direct. read more...
