Henry V (1989)

Kenneth Branagh's audacious debut, Henry V (1989), was made when he was just 29 (and partly financed by the sales of his autobiography!). In England, Laurence Oliver's 1944 version was considered the definitive screen version, and many were aghast that anyone would ever even attempt a remake. But Branagh pulled it off spectacularly, creating one of the best of all screen Shakespeare adaptations, and earning dual Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Actor. His muddy, bloody "once more unto the breach, dear friends!" speech is every bit as rousing as Olivier's. Look for young Christian Bale the "luggage boy." Robbie Coltrane makes a fun Falstaff, effectively folded into this play, and tragically denounced by Henry when he becomes king ("I know thee not, old man.") Patrick Doyle's stirring musical score is one of the best of its time, and the movie took home one Oscar for its costume design. read more...

The Post (2017)

Screenwriter Josh Singer scored with Spotlight (2015), an amazingly smart, suspenseful, balanced newspaper movie with strong characters and a passion for journalism. Though everyone agreed it was a terrific movie, it was also agreed that director Tom McCarthy's visualization was a little on the ordinary side. Steven Spielberg, who I think is unquestionably one of the greatest living filmmakers, has never had such limitations, and he takes Singer's follow-up screenplay The Post — co-written with Liz Hannah — and turns it into a rich, dynamic cinematic tapestry worthy of his best films. It's exciting and essential, and one of my favorite films of 2017. read more...

    Trumbo (2015)

This biopic could have fallen into all the usual traps, but Jay Roach directs John McNamara's smart, witty screenplay with a light touch, and the finished movie is both entertaining and educational. Set between the 1940s and the 1960s, the movie could have been a mere collection of highlights, but the filmmakers manage to create a vivid gallery of colorful supporting characters that contribute equally; in the lead, Bryan Cranston is marvelous — with an endless flow of crystalline dialogue — but it's not just a one-man show. read more...
