Twin Peaks (TV Series) (1990)

"She's dead... wrapped in plastic," says Jack Nance (star of Eraserhead) -- thus beginning the weirdest and second-greatest TV show of all time (after "The Simpsons"), "Twin Peaks." David Lynch and Mark Frost ostensibly based the premise of the show around solving the murder of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), but it was just an excuse to build a bizarre collection of soap opera characters who could function on their own even without a murder mystery. Our key into Twin Peaks, was of course, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) who was just weird enough himself to fit in. read more...

Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974)

I became a fan of director Jacques Rivette in 1992 after seeing his four-hour La Belle Noiseuse on the big screen. Unlike his "Cahiers du Cinema" partners, though, Rivette's films are few and far between in the United States and it was difficult for me to see anything more. Thankfully, this early masterpiece was recently released on home video, despite all the earmarks of a financial failure. There are video gods out there that watch over us film buffs. read more...

Lynch's virtuoso ninth feature film Mulholland Drive (for which he co-won the Best Director honor at Cannes) delivers the suspense and the tension, but you'll find -- more often than not -- your train of thought will be derailed as you slam into a dead end in this dark labyrinth of a movie. read more...
