Avanti! (1972)

In Avanti!, the fifth of his seven films with Billy Wilder, Jack Lemmon plays Wendell Armbruster, a busy, married American who travels to Italy to claim the body of his dead father. Once there, he discovers that his father had a mistress, who died in the same accident. He also meets his father's mistress's daughter, the adorable Pamela Piggott (Juliet Mills), who is inexplicably supposed to be fat. Wilder justifies this film's length (144 minutes) with its loving, carefree and even relaxing Italian vacation atmosphere. The more things get fouled up, the more free time Armbruster and Piggott have to spend together and the more they begin to unwind. This film also marks the first time Wilder uses sex and nudity onscreen and viewers may see a little more of Lemmon than they wanted. read more...

Irma la Douce (1963)

Billy Wilder somehow sustains the lively pace and humor for the two-and-a-half hour color comedy Irma la Douce (1963) in which Shirley MacLaine stars as a popular Paris hooker who falls in love with squeaky-clean beat cop Jack Lemmon (the pair re-teaming after the highly successful The Apartment). This was perhaps Wilder's last modest hit, but it's also one of his lesser films; it's difficult to entirely justify the overwhelming length. André Previn won an Oscar for his score. MacLaine was nominated for Best Actress, as was Joseph LaShelle's color cinematography. Look for Tura Satana (future star of Russ Meyer's Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!) in her first role. read more...

Café Society (2016)

I sometimes feel like I, as well as many of my colleagues, are in a bit of a rut when it comes to reviewing Woody Allen's latest movies. Like many of them, I am a longtime fan. I first discovered his movies when I was a teenager; Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) was one of the life-changing moviegoing events of my life. As I became a journalist, it was thrilling getting to review his movies as they came out, but essentially what I ended up doing was comparing the new movie to whatever worked or didn't work in Allen's previous films. At times, it seemed like Allen was entering new phases of his career, trying new things, allowing himself to change, which was exciting. Other times, as with the new Café Society, it's hard to know just what to say. read more...
