My adoration for the work of Abbas Kiarostami started shortly after I became a film critic and attended a screening of Taste of Cherry. The movie fascinated me while it perturbed many others, and I began researching and trying to see as many Iranian movies as I could. I found many talented filmmakers, but Kiarostami's work rose to the top, especially his "earthquake trilogy" (Where Is the Friend's Home?; Life and Nothing More, and Through the Olive Trees) and the masterpiece Close-Up. I was enthralled by his use of individuals in uncertain landscapes, either in cars, or on roads. read more...

Paterson (2016)

Watching Jim Jarmusch's last film, Only Lovers Left Alive, I realized that I like his films better with less talking. This is not to imply that Jarmusch can't write dialogue. It's just that he tends to say more with less. His quieter films — Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Mystery Train, Dead Man, Ghost Dog, and Broken Flowers — tend to be better than his talkier ones, like Night on Earth, Coffee and Cigarettes, etc. (We will have to leave The Limits of Control up for debate.) Now comes another quiet one, and I'd rank Paterson among his very best films. It's a treasure, and the best American film of 2016. read more...

Baraka (1992)

As soon as it was invented, cinema began to attract storytellers. The mere nature of the beast -- a long roll of film with a beginning, a middle and an end -- seemed built for the singular purpose of telling stories. But over the years, a few cinema artists have stood back and asked themselves: Why does it have to be that way? The very first film was simply a man sneezing -- no story there, just a statement. A poem about the way we live. Some of the major experimenters in this field include Andy Warhol, Dziga Vertov, Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren and Michael Snow -- some household names, most not. But though I can't say for sure, the most popular form of non-narrative feature film seems to be of the Koyaanisqatsi type; a collage of beautiful images accompanied by meditative, mystical music. Director Godfrey Reggio made that ground-breaking cult film back in 1983, with writing, editing and cinematography help by Ron Fricke. read more...
