How Green Was My Valley (1941)

The tough, but highly sentimental John Ford was one of the few great cinema artists who was appreciated in his time. He even won the third of his four Best Director Oscars for this great, corny look at a Welsh mining town and the family who tries to endure hard times. Young Roddy McDowall plays the youngest family member (who narrates the tale) and he gives an amazingly intuitive performance. Walter Pidgeon, Donald Crisp and Maureen O'Hara round out the cast. The DVD includes a fine featurette from "AMC Backstory," a full-length commentary track by Ford biographer Joseph McBride and Actress Anna Lee Nathan, a still gallery and trailers. read more...

Ride the High Country (1962)

Sam Peckinpah's early feature, Ride the High Country (1962) has become as rare as gold, and so its DVD debut is cause for hootin' and hollerin.' It's the ironically sprightly and funny tale of two old-time cowboys on what could be their last adventure. Hired to transport gold from a mining camp to a bank, Steve Judd (Joel McCrea) enlists the help of his old partner, Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott). read more...

Casablanca (1942)

Casablanca is the epitome of movie magic. Who would have thought that such a ragtag melodramatic old story could stand the test of time and melt even the grumpiest of hearts? It's just the right combination of elements: Humphrey Bogart's cynical Rick, whose heart always goes out to the underdog, Ingrid Bergman's lovely and brave Ilsa, and the rogue's gallery of shrieking weasel Peter Lorre, crooked official Claude Rains, and charming slug Sidney Greenstreet. It also gives us Dooley Wilson as Sam the piano player and Paul Henreid as Victor Laszlo, the man that causes all the trouble in the first place. Add to this Max Steiner's heartbreaking score, the great dialogue by the Epstein brothers (Julius and Philip), and the whole thing held magically together by studio director Michael Curtiz, and it doesn't even matter that Howard Hawks made the same movie better with To Have and Have Not (1944). Everyone who loves going to the movies loves Casablanca. Lines like "is that cannonfire... or the beating of my heart?" make me wince, but I'm hooked. I've seen Casablanca more than 20 times and I'm always ready to see it again, Sam. read more...
