Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

The wonderful little scream queen Danielle Harris -- who grew up to become a lovely 35 year-old -- returns as young Jamie Lloyd. The movie fails to deliver on the deliciously creepy ending of Part 4, but now it focuses on Jamie, checked into a kids' hospital. She is doing better, but Halloween is approaching once again, and she is beginning to have seizures whenever Michael Myers (Don Shanks) thinks about killing. Donald Pleasence returns as Dr. Loomis, even loonier than ever before. read more...

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

Director Dwight H. Little borrows John Carpenter's creepy theme music but can't quite copy the way Carpenter used Myers' silent, hulking presence. Here, his attacks come across like nightmares, suddenly ending with a gasp. There are a number of interesting touches, from a mob of unruly rednecks with guns, to Pleasence's hysterical line readings. But young Ms. Harris is probably the movie's most powerful element. She effortlessly earns our sympathy, and yet there's more to her than meets the eye. Harris became a much-loved cult actress, especially now that she's grown-up and pretty, and has been featured in many horror movies as a tribute to her work here. read more...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

I saw this in the theater with a group of high school friends, and it was great fun. Somehow A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors has always been just a bit more enjoyable than the typical horror sequel. Maybe it's because of the adorable young Patricia Arquette, or the youngish Laurence Fishburne. Or maybe it's because of "B" movie great John Saxon, or the return of the perpetually sleepy Heather Langenkamp, and the great, campy Robert Englund from the first movie. Or maybe it's because Wes Craven himself helped write the screenplay, alongside Frank Darabont, who would go on to become a highly acclaimed director himself. Or maybe it's because of the unique killing scenes, such as the huge Freddy Krueger snake, or the unforgettable TV scene ("It's your big break in TV!"). Maybe it's even because of the anthemic, cheesy metal theme song, "Dream Warriors" by Dokken. Anyway you slice it (no pun intended) this is a must-see for anyone who has a soft-spot for 1980s horror movies. read more...
