Johnny Dangerously (1984)

I love this oddball period gangster spoof, directed by Amy Heckerling, with Michael Keaton at his cockiest, snappiest, and coolest as the title gangster who tries to support his ma (Maureen Stapleton) and tries to keep his kid brother (Griffin Dunne) on the straight and narrow. The setting is decidedly non-realistic -- it doesn't take place in any kind of reality, or in any kind of gangster film you've ever seen before -- and the jokes range from deadpan visuals to clever wordplay to irreverently dumb, repeated jokes that escalate with each telling. Joe Piscopo is also funny as the snide gun nut Vermin. But the villain Roman Troy Moronie, played by Richard Dimitri, gets the biggest laughs with his fractured curses, like "you fargin bastages!" The movie did not perform well either with audiences or critics, but it has its passionate fans today. "Weird Al" Yankovic provided a ragtime-style theme song, "This Is the Life," that fit perfectly, but was eventually deleted from home video releases for legal reasons. read more...

High Anxiety (1977)

With two hit spoofs under his belt, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles, Mel Brooks took on the narrower and more difficult target of Alfred Hitchcock films. With horror movies or Westerns, the range was much broader; there was more material to play with. But Hitchcock's movies are already so precise and playful that there's very little room for parody. The best Brooks can do is to place himself in the shower with an angry bellhop outside the curtain, or to run through the park with an army of vengeful birds crapping on his suit. Most of this stuff isn't particularly funny however, and even though I watched High Anxiety for the first time in 2010, I'm not sure it would have been very funny back in 1977 either. read more...

Love Happy (1949)

David Miller's Love Happy (1949) is the last official Marx Brothers movie, and it's an awkward attempt to combine the stuff that made the brothers great in their earlier movies, with some more "modern" stuff. The result is some decent scenes, plus many other flat ones, but very few actual laughs. read more...
