The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1990)

Peter Greenaway's biggest hit and most straightforward film was one of the best films of 1990 with its colorful and depraved look at a secret love tryst in a snooty restaurant. Helen Mirren plays the thief's wife who leaves the table for meetings with her lover (Alan Howard). The most unforgettable moment has them hiding out naked in a truck full of rotting meat and maggots. Greenaway's innovative camera steals the film, roaming horizontally back and forth along the walls of the various colored rooms. Most of Greenaway's films fall right over the edge with their disturbing pretensions, but The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover manages to mesh a wicked sense of humor with a vivid sense of horror, with enough closeted poetry left over that scholars can read anything into it. Tim Roth also stars. read more...

Blade Runner (1982)

The screenplay by David Peoples and Hampton Fancher, based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is full of little puzzles, such as the little Origami creatures left lying around by Gaff (Edward James Olmos) and the fact that Deckard only manages to kill women replicants. Blade Runner is an extraordinary work; beautifully designed on a relatively low budget, ambiguous, and darkly poetic. It's more slowly paced than we would ever allow a movie to be today, but its pace is essential for sustaining the unique mood. Blade Runner also stars M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, and Brion James. read more...
