Die Nibelungen (1924)

The underrated Fritz Lang earned belated critical recognition for his personal stamp included on his many claustrophobic crime pictures. The DVD release of Die Nibelungen opens an entirely new chapter in Lang's career. By 1924, Lang had already mastered the two-part epic, a lengthy film released in theaters in two different sections. Following up his masterful Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler, he turned his skills to this astonishing, five-hour fantasy. read more...

    A Most Wanted Man (2014)

With his controlled, restrained filmmaking that allows for mood-enhancing moments, former music video maker Anton Corbijn (Control, The American) is the right man for this John Le Carre thriller. Based on a strong screenplay by Andrew Bovell, Corbijn's highly intelligent A Most Wanted Man is patient with its details, uses urban locations to gloomy effect, and revels in soft-spoken, spring-loaded conversations. read more...

    Selma (2014)

As an Oprah-endorsed awards-season biopic of an Important Person, Selma sounds like a dud. But don't be fooled. Despite all the great things you're going to hear about this movie, it actually is very good. Credit goes to director Ava DuVernay, who began as a publicist and turned filmmaker in 2008. I haven't seen any of her earlier films, but it's clear she has talent. read more...
