    Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

Trying to describe the Australian director Peter Weir's great second feature film Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) usually involves the word "haunting." It's a beautiful, mysterious movie about a group of students at an all-girl's school in 1900. They take a day trip to Hanging Rock, an incredible landscape of tall, stony shapes lined with winding paths without beginning or end. After a dreamy afternoon, several of the girls and a teacher cannot be found. If you like your movies tied up in a neat bow, better skip this one. Like many 1970s movies, this one is about more than just its plot. Weir has often made films about characters that are at odds with their environment in some way, and this one remains one of his best and most fascinating. Look for the future Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver in a small role. read more...

      The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

Perhaps the most striking thing about The Talented Mr. Ripley is the music by Gabriel Yared, which is designed to sound like a vintage Bernard Herrmann score for an Alfred Hitchcock film. It has echoes of Vertigo (1958), North By Northwest (1959), and Psycho (1960). The movie itself has a few Hitchcockian moments, most noticeably in the opening titles, as the picture dissipates into shards of different colors. But comparisons to Hitchcock stop there. The Master of Suspense would never have turned in a movie this sloppy. read more...

      Le Pont du Nord (1981)

Jacques Rivette's Le Pont du Nord is a minor work in the career of a great filmmaker, one of the seminal members of the French New Wave. It features a woman, Marie (Bulle Ogier), who is recently released from prison and returns to Paris, but does not wish to go indoors, at all, not even a train or a car. She has a minor collision with a motorcycle rider, Baptiste (Pascale Ogier, Bulle's daughter), and from then on the two women are inseparable. Marie wishes to meet her lover, Julien (Pierre Clémenti), who is in the middle of some kind of mysterious deal involving a briefcase. A man (Jean-François Stévenin) occasionally appears to be following them. Baptiste is a kind of conspiracy theorist, and believes that people are parts of a secret spy organization. read more...
