The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944)

One of Preston Sturges' zanier films, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek begs the question: how did he get away with this? The very premise must have sent the censors into fits. After a drunken night out with a group of sailors, Trudy Kockenlocker (Betty Hutton) wakes up to the realization that she's married and pregnant but doesn't know who the man is, nor where he's gone. Nervous, good-hearted Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken) --with a medical condition that keeps him out of the military -- tries to help in every way he can, even attempting to marry her under the name she thinks she remembers: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki. read more...

The Awful Truth (1937)

Director Leo McCarey, who was the subject of a recent New York retrospective, was something of a forerunner to Woody Allen. Starting in two-reel silent films, McCarey cranked out dozens of slapstick shorts with Laurel and Hardy and other comedians -- none of which would indicate any particular signature style. As the sound era came in, and especially during the pre-code era, McCarey translated his talents to a group of scrappy feature film comedies like Six of a Kind, Belle of the Nineties with Mae West, Ruggles of Red Gap, The Milky Way with Harold Lloyd and especially the great Marx Brothers movie Duck Soup. read more...
