Romántico (2005)

Mark Becker's Romantico is my favorite documentary in well over a year, simply because it's about a person rather than an issue. It begins in San Francisco's Mission District as Carmelo Muñiz Sanchez, a mariachi, serenades the customers at the neighborhood's various yummy tacquerias. We learn that Carmelo makes about $100 a night, a portion of which he sends back to his wife and two daughters in Mexico. After a while he misses them too much and returns, but work isn't so plentiful or lucrative there. Worse, his chances of returning to the U.S. are slim, at best. read more...

The House Is Black (1962)

Though unknown to most Americans, Iranian feminist poet Forough Farrokhzad's work appears in one sequence, and in the title, of Abbas Kiarostami's 1999 masterpiece The Wind Will Carry Us. Many years earlier, Farrokhzad (1935-67) made her own foray into filmmaking at the age of 27 with this lone 22-minute short. The House Is Black is ostensibly a documentary about a leper colony, but Farrokhzad establishes only a few random facts about the disease. Mostly, she wishes to discover the humanity of these people. read more...

42 Up (1999)

This was my first time to the Up documentaries of Michael Apted, but I've been aware of them since 1985, when the fourth installment, 28 Up came out. Even knowing what the project was and how it was being carried out was enough to impress me, without even seeing it. But seeing one of the films adds a depth that one can hardly imagine. read more...
