Tarzan and His Mate (1934)

Many writers have tried to understand the appeal of this very strange story of a man raised in the jungle by apes. The most plausible idea is that Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote it at the turn of the century, at the beginning of the industrial age, and it represented a yearning to get back to nature, to indulge in our animal side. Moreover, the jungle sets are more inviting than a real jungle might be. In any case, Tarzan has resulted in at least 40 official movies and probably several dozen more unofficial ones. read more...

Foreign Correspondent (1940)

Alfred Hitchcock wanted Gary Cooper for this superior espionage thriller, but Hitch was still a Hollywood amateur and hadn't yet developed his reputation (Cooper thought it would be "beneath" him to make a mere "thriller.") And though Hitch considered his eventual star "too easy-going," Joel McCrea works very well as an American reporter sent to Europe to scrape up news during the early days of WWII. He gives the movie a light touch and even provides a few laughs. read more...

My Darling Clementine (1946)

The lanky, laconic Henry Fonda starred in just as many John Ford Westerns as his colleague John Wayne, but he's more remembered for his well-spoken, upright heroes than for his cowboys. Still, if it weren't for his brilliant performance in Young Mr. Lincoln, John Ford might never have envisioned him for Wyatt Earp. The Earp story My Darling Clementine (1946, Fox) may be John Ford's most achingly beautiful Western. read more...
