    We Own the Night (2007)

James Gray's films have a certain nostalgia for the 1970s, and sometimes feature stars from that era in supporting roles. This gives his films the illusion of grit and risk, but I find the films themselves a level removed from that era, as if staring at a museum piece through a pane of glass. Nevertheless, Gray has his enthusiastic supporters, notably European critics. read more...

      Clash by Night (1952)

Only a year after the sensation of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), RKO probably ordered something similar when they assigned Fritz Lang to direct this Clifford Odets play. Though Clash by Night doesn't have Brando, Lang was twice the director that Elia Kazan was and manages to stitch together a moving, nervously effective film. The great Barbara Stanwyck appears at the height of her powers as Mae, a restless, wandering soul who returns to her hometown, a fishing village, when she runs out of places to go. read more...

        August: Osage County (2013)

Over the past few years, the great director William Friedkin has brought two Tracy Letts plays to the big screen, with masterful results. Both Bug (2007) and Killer Joe (2012) were incredible films, both highly underrated. Now here comes another Letts play, August: Osage County, made by a slightly less intriguing director than Friedkin, John Wells. He has only made one other feature, The Company Men, which I did not see. read more...
