The Exorcist (1973)

I was too young to catch William Friedkin's The Exorcist when it first opened, but my parents owned a paperback copy of William Peter Blatty's novel. On the back cover was plastered a picture of the possessed Regan (played by Linda Blair) that gave me the chills. I used to sneak into my parents' bedroom to steal a look at that book and give myself a spine-tingle. I think that's the secret of the huge success of The Exorcist, that little tingle. read more...

Memento (2001)

A hand clutches a Polaroid of a grisly murder, holding it for a long moment, before giving it an impatient shake... the way people do with Polaroids. But there's something odd about this shake. When the photo comes back into view, it's slightly faded. Another shake. The photo turns milky-gray, the color of a freshly discharged Polaroid. The image cuts and the photo leaps back into the camera. Another cut and Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) shoots a man in the head. read more...

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick's horror film, The Shining (based on the Stephen King novel) creates some of the most genuine spine chills ever filmed. Taking a job as a winter caretaker for a giant and remote hotel, Jack Nicholson, his wife Shelley Duvall, and his son Danny Lloyd, find that the long hallways and empty rooms contain more than a few ghosts. The film goes from scary to amusing as Jack slowly turns into a psychopath, taking an axe to his loved ones. (Why is it that Kubrick's psychopaths -- McDowell in A Clockwork Orange, Nicholson, and Ermey in Full Metal Jacket -- are so much fun?) Kubrick's use of space and the eerie steadycam have never been put to better use, and the great Scatman Crothers provides some fun support. read more...
