The Secret World of Arrietty (2012)

It's all about the ladybugs. The animators at Japan's Studio Ghibli have been making children's movies since the 1980s and have earned the adoration of young and old, worldwide. They have done this not by making breakneck, slapstick movies full of fart jokes, but by focusing on the flow of life. These movies actually take the time, once a scene is over, to linger in the moment and watch a ladybug crawl across a leaf and take to the sky. read more...

The BFG (2016)

Due to some scheduling conflicts, I came to Steven Spielberg's The BFG a bit late, after it was already on track to become one of the director's biggest flops. I can't understand why; it seems to me that it's one of his gentlest and most beautiful films, less frenetic than Hook, less grueling than E.T. the Extra-terrestrial and less wispy than War Horse. I can only guess that because The BFG comes from a book by the wicked, clever Roald Dahl, viewers have been miffed that Spielberg's movie is soft and touching instead. But I loved it. (Melissa Mathison, the screenwriter of E.T., re-teamed with Spielberg for this one, apparently completing it before her death in November of last year.) read more...

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)

The new sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass has many of the same good things going for it as its predecessor, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), but also several more bad things. The good things include the costumes and set design (both of which won Oscars last time around), strange computer and makeup effects that distort Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and their appealingly silly line readings as the Mad Hatter and the deposed Red Queen Iracebeth. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is also something of an action hero, which puts a small dent in the annual argument that women are not reasonably represented in film. The new movie adds an amusing Sacha Baron Cohen as Time himself (who channels Werner Herzog). read more...
