Sergeant Rutledge (1960)

John Ford's Sergeant Rutledge is an astonishing film not only for its sheer visual and narrative excellence but also for its early acknowledgement of race relations in America. It's strikingly similar to To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), but two years earlier and a great deal angrier. read more...

The Last Laugh (1924)

F.W. Murnau's The Last Laugh stars the irrepressible Emil Jannings, at the time considered perhaps the finest of all screen actors. He plays an aging hotel doorman, dressed in an elegant head-to-toe uniform, complete with white gloves and dotted with shiny buttons. His uniform is a source of great pride as he walks to and from work each day; his neighbors fawn over him. One night, during a downpour, he is unable to lift a heavy chest and his boss transfers him to a downstairs washroom attendant job. Stripped of his uniform, he also loses his pride and dignity. (Jannings' body leans in a twisted, physical representation of shame; he's literally unable to stand up straight.) read more...

White Christmas (1954)

In 1942, Bing Crosby released one of the biggest recorded hits of all time, "White Christmas," and twelve years later came the official movie, White Christmas (1954), filmed in color and "Vistavision." Crosby plays a popular singer, Bob Wallace, who is stationed overseas during WWII. During an attack, songwriter Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) saves Bob's life, and they become partners in peacetime. Teaming up with sister singers Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen), they decide to put on a show to save their old major general's struggling Vermont hotel. Director Michael Curtiz's approach seems a little lethargic at times, the plot relies a bit too much on a ridiculous misunderstanding, and the movie isn't actually all that Christmasy. But it does have a lovely laid-back simplicity that fits in with what the holiday season ought to feel like. read more...
