Prick Up Your Ears (1987)

Stephen Frears' Prick Up Your Ears is still one of the better examples of a filmed biopic, focusing on one dramatic aspect of a famous person's life, rather than a cradle-to-grave compressing of an entire existence. Rebellious, swaggering playwright Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) shocked audiences with his plays during his brief 34 years, but this movie focuses mainly on his long-term relationship with Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina), who was seemingly his polar opposite, fastidious and dissatisfied. (Both performances are excellent.) Orton did what he wanted, and took lovers on the side, but he and Kenneth lived together, fought, and were seemingly inseparable. Screenwriter Alan Bennett and director Frears don't shy away from the domestic details (rare and courageous, I might add, for 1987), and they create a vivid, prickly, and sometimes funny relationship. Wallace Shawn plays a present day writer who is researching Orton after his death, and Vanessa Redgrave plays Orton's agent. On their TV show, Siskel and Ebert both chose this as one of the year's ten best films. Olive Films released it on Blu-ray in 2015. read more...

The Woman on the Beach (1947)

This was the fifth and final film Jean Renoir made in English during his Hollywood sojourn, after Swamp Water (1941), This Land Is Mine (1943), The Southerner (1945), and Diary of a Chambermaid (1946); unfortunately, it was also the film that hastened his departure. According to some reports, Renoir screened a cut for an audience in Santa Barbara, which snickered all the way through. He then frantically and recklessly re-shot and re-edited, and wound up with the 71-minute cut that exists today (the excised footage is apparently no longer around). read more...

Two Lovers (2009)

Here are two things I think I know about James Gray. One is that he's probably obsessed with American movies of the 1970s; he misses the days when movies used to be gritty and were actually about characters. The second is that he's currently one of the darlings of French movie critics and audiences. His movies are routinely hailed as masterpieces there, and get considerably more box office attention than they do here. (Gray's latest, Two Lovers, opened in France last November.) Here's another thing: Gray's earlier movies (The Yards, We Own the Night) seemed to me to overtly copy the gritty style of 1970s movies, but the more experience he gets, the more genuinely emotional his films grow. I've liked each of his films better than the last, and this one is now my favorite. read more...
