The Gold Rush (1925)

"I don't need interesting camera angles," Charlie Chaplin once said, "I am interesting." He was right; Chaplin's artistry always springs from the figure at the center of the frame rather than the arrangement of objects within the frame. Chaplin's "Little Tramp" character, with twirling cane and little moustache -- and his too-tight coat and hat and too-loose shoes and pants -- was always an outsider longing to get in. The Little Mermaid (1989)

Disney's The Little Mermaid, based loosely on the Hans Christian Andersen story and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, probably doesn't look like much today. Up to then, Disney releases like The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986) and Oliver & Company (1988) failed to excite many patrons or critics. The Little Mermaid ended Disney's long slump, became a blockbuster and started the company back up the ladder to power. A dynamic, Caribbean-flavored score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors) and an adorable heroine -- with a bell-clear singing voice -- helped pump some energy into the project. read more...

The Cameraman (1928)

Sometimes it works out well that Warner Home Video has been releasing all of the old MGM stuff on DVD, because certainly MGM wouldn't want to admit that signing Buster Keaton in 1928 was the worst mistake of the comedian's life. read more...
