    The Hired Hand (1971)

Only two years after Once Upon a Time in the West (1969), Henry Fonda's son Peter directed and starred in a kind of arty Western that only could have been made in the early 70s and in the wake of Easy Rider. Photographed by Vilmos Zsigmond, the stunningly beautiful The Hired Hand is one of the great, underrated films of the 70s. Peter Fonda and Warren Oates play a couple of drifters who ride around until Fonda finally decides after seven years to go back home to his wife. As director, Fonda concentrates on rhythms and moods more so than on plot, and the lovely cinematography certainly helps. read more...

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011)

This Turkish drama by acclaimed director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Distant, Climates, Three Monkeys) runs nearly three hours, but is instantly absorbing and not easy to let go of. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011) takes place over the course of one long night. It begins in the dark, employing some dramatic lighting using the car headlights. A group of police and detectives, other professionals, and two murder suspects drive around the hills outside of town, searching for a buried corpse. The suspects claim that they can't remember the exact location of the body, and they keep trying new places with landmarks that look the same. The men grow tired as the sky grows brighter. read more...

        Meek's Cutoff (2011)

In 1845, three families drive their wagon train toward California to settle and seek their fortunes. They have a hired guide, Meek (Bruce Greenwood), who tells a good story but who sometimes doesn't seem to know where he's going. One of the women, Emily Tetherow (Michelle Williams), seems to be tougher, smarter, and more practical than anyone else, and her wisdom often points the way. As the story begins, they gather fresh water at a creek, but their supplies are already dwindling again. At one point, a lone American Indian turns up, and the cowboys capture him, hoping that he can lead them to water. But Meek insists that this is only a trap, and it will lead to an Indian attack. Will the thirsty travelers make it through? read more...
