    The Missouri Breaks (1976)

The Missouri Breaks seems like something worked out in the mind of a studio executive, hiring two recent Best Actor Oscar winners and box office champs, Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, as well as director Arthur Penn, who had helped re-shape the entire movie business years earlier with Bonnie and Clyde. When it finally arrived, it was critically panned and a financial flop. Now, however, it looks quite a bit more interesting, with its odd, laggy rhythms and weird touches. read more...

      Valdez Is Coming (1971)

Burt Lancaster is quite good in the title role in Valdez Is Coming, although here in 2018, it's the kind of role that would raise hackles; why did it have to be played by a white actor, when it's a perfectly good role for a Latino actor? In any case, with a story by Elmore Leonard, the movie has its good points, notably its intriguingly gray-area setup. A rich white landowner has a black man trapped in a cabin. He claims the black man has committed some crime. Valdez goes to the cabin to speak to him, and it's confirmed that he is, in fact, not guilty. But one of the landowner's nasty henchman has crept up behind Valdez with a gun. The black man sees this, thinks he has been double-crossed, and attacks Valdez. Valdez shoots and kills the man. It's clearly not his fault, but he did pull the trigger. read more...

        In Old Arizona (1929)

Short story master O. Henry probably had no idea how popular his Cisco Kid character would become when he wrote "The Caballero's Way" in 1904. The character turned up in silent movies, "B" movies and on television for decades to come, played by everyone from Ceasar Romero to Jimmy Smits. But the most popular interpretation has to be this 1929 version, directed by Raoul Walsh with Irving Cummings. As the Cisco Kid, Warner Baxter was so effective that he won an Oscar for Best Actor and became a big star. read more...
