    Burn! (1969)

Restored in 2004, Gillo Pontecorvo's extraordinary 1969 film tells the story of William Walker (Marlon Brando), a kind of agent provocateur sent to a fictitious Caribbean island to instigate a slave revolt and gain control of the island's sugar. He trains a black leader, Jose Dolores (Evaristo Marquez), who fights against the Portuguese and the British to achieve freedom for the slaves. Walker leaves and must return ten years later to help destroy the very thing he created. read more...

    Go for Sisters (2013)

The name John Sayles should be legend in movie circles. He has been an independent, uncompromising filmmaker for 33 years, making adult dramas about the gray areas of life. (Although he does pay the rent by selling his services as a Hollywood screenwriter and script doctor.) Go for Sisters is his latest, his eighteenth overall, and despite a lone Independent Spirit Award nomination, it seems destined to fade into this awards season unnoticed. read more...

      Home of the Brave (1949)

Director Mark Robson made his directorial debut while working under the command of genius producer Val Lewton at RKO, and while his career turned out to be rather unmemorable, there are certain moments here and that that show his training. Home of the Brave is an impressive, ahead-of-its-time drama that deserves to be better known. On the surface, it's a war movie, but it's really about a black soldier and his feelings. read more...
